18th Century Ginger Biscuits

A wonderful Christmas recipe from the past

This recipe is coming directly from the 18th Century and Ginger and Nutmeg are the two special ingredients. This recipe will give you the opportunity to taste some food made back in the days from our ancestors.

Ingredients for the dough:

  • 450 gr of Flour
  • 170 gr of Sugar
  • 30 gr of Ginger
  • 240 ml Milk
  • 170 gr Butter
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of Nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon of Baking Powder

Process:

  1. Start by mixing all the dry ingredients. First the flour, then add the sugar, the ginger and the nutmeg.
  2. Now, you should add the baking powder in the milk and let it sit for few minutes.
  3. Mix the dry ingredients with the butter (at room temperature). Then, add the wet ingredients. Start with the milk where you previously melt the baking powder. Afterwards, put the eggs. Kneed everything together until reaching a non-sticky consistency.
  4. At this moment, you need to prepare the biscuits shape. So, first find a flat surface in your kitchen, it will help you roll the dough. Once you found it, start by taking a piece of the dough and roll it on the flat surface. Image 1
  5. Then, if you have some biscuits shapes use them to make nice shaped biscuits (I used some Christmas shapes). Once you have the shapes, put them in an oven tray. Continue with this process until you finish the dough. Image 2 and 3
  6. Bake the biscuits for 10/15 min at 180° degrees.

Enjoy your meal!

Variants:

  • If you like marmelade or chocolate cream, you can put them as topping on the biscuits before baking them. You can see that I put chocolate cream on mine Image 4.
