Burgers with Sweet potatoes

A proper meal for the all family

If you like meat and you don’t want to go out for eating a good burger, here is a good recipe for making onw on your own.

Ingredients (for 5 persons):

For the potato wedges and the dip:

  • 1 kg sweet potatoes
  • paprika spice
  • 1 dryed tomato
  • 1 red sweet pepper
  • chilli powder or sauce

For the burgers:

  • 5 buns
  • 1 kg minced meat (either pure beef or beef and pork mixed)
  • 2 gherkins
  • 2 big beef tomatoes
  • 5 slices of cheese (e.g. gouda or cheddar)
  • 75 gr ketchup
  • 50 gr mustard
  • 50 gr mayonnaise
  • 5 big skewers
  • herbs and spices as you please

Process:

  • Process for Sweet potato wedges with mojo rosso dip
  1. Peel the sweet potatoes, cut them lengthwise and put them in a bowl
  2. Add the paprika spice, salt and pepper on top and mix everything well.
  3. Finally, add some vegetable oil on top and put them in the oven for about half an hour at 180°C.
  4. In the meantime, you can prepare the dip.
  5. Cut the sweet pepper and remove the seeds inside, then slice it into small cubes. Do the same for the dryed tomato.
  6. Add one tablespoon of oil and one teaspoon of chilli powder or sauce.
  7. Mix everything and jam it until it becomes an even sauce.
  • Process for Burgers
  1. For the burger sauce, we just need to add together 50g mayonnaise, 50 gr mustard, 75 gr ketchup and one tablespoon of gherkin water with a little bit of salt and pepper. If you wish, you can also spice it up with some chilli powder.
  2. To prepare the burger patties, add some pepper (but not salt!) to the minced meat and knead it well.
  3. To form the patties, take a ball of about 200 grams, throw it several times between your hands until it is slightly sticky and firm. Then press the meat flat, but leave a slight pit in the middle. While cooking the patties will shrink and leaving a little pit in the middle will make the burgers not wobble. Sprinkle the salt on top of the patties and let them sit in the fridge for half an hour.
  4. Now we need to prepare the rest of the ingredients for the burger. Cut the tomatoes into slices (about half a centimeter thick) and remove the stalk. Also cut the gherkins into lengthwise stripes. Cut the onion into rings and fry them briefly in the pan (the pan should not be fully heated up yet). Remove the fried onion rings from the pan (now it should be hot) and place the burger patties inside. Afterwards, turn down the heat to medium.
  5. Cook the patties for a few minutes with the led closed, then turn them and let cook for another one to two minutes. Then, place the cheese, gherkin and tomato slices and top and close the lid again. Let this sit for a few moments until the cheese has melted.
  6. At this point, you can cut and toast the burger buns. Distribute the burger sauce on both parts of the buns and place the fried onion rings. Finally, take the burger patties out of the pan and carefully place them on the prepare bun bases. Now you can still add a salad leaf and close the burger with the top bun.
  7. Since by now the burger is probably quite tall, I recommend putting a skewer from the top to the bottom of the burger, to provide additional stability while eating.

Variants:

  • Instead of the red majo dip, you can crème fraiche with some curry inside or with whatever other spice you like.
  • Instead of normal buns, you can use oat buns or dark flour buns or even sausages (see Image 5).

Tips:

  • Overall, I like the following order of ingredients:
BUN
SAUCE
SALAD
TOMATO
GHERKIN
CHEESE
PATTY
ONIONS
SAUCE
BUN
