Orange Chocolate Cake

An amazing Orage Chocolate cake

I tried this recipe during the Christmas Holidays as we had plenty of oranges and dark chocolate. I would say that it is a fairly fast recipe and it does not require too much effort.

Ingredients (for 8 people)

  • 150 gr flour
  • 100 gr sugar
  • 7 gr baking powder
  • 200 gr organic orange (with skin)
  • 50 ml oil
  • 60 ml milk
  • 50 gr of dark chocolate bar / chocolate chips
  • 2 small eggs

Decoration

  • 5/6 organic orange slices cut in half
  • icing sugar

Process:

  1. After gathering the necessary ingredients, you will need to process the dry ingredients and the liquid ingredients separately Image 1.
  2. You can start with liquid ingredients. Cut the two ends of the orange (top and bottom) and dice it with the skin. Put it in a mixer and mash it until it becomes cream. Now add milk and oil and keep mixing until the ingredients are well blended together Images 2, 3 and 4.
  3. Now you can work with the dry ingredients. Take a bowl and pour inside flour, baking powder and sugar. Whisk for 5 minutes Image 5.
  4. Incorporate the orange cream into the dry ingredients bowl. Pour the mixture with the help of a spatula. Add egg and whisk all ingredients together until obtaining a creamy mixture. You should whisk for at least 5 minutes.
  5. If you are using dark chocolate bar, now it is time to chop it. Then incorporated it in the creamy mixture. If you are using chocolate chips, you can directly pour them into the mixture. Whisk all ingredients for another couple of minutes Image 6.
  6. You can now prepare the baking shape. I used a rectangular and a square shape. Both worked perfectly fine. However, you can also use a round one. Grease the baking tray either with a spray or a bit of butter/margarine and bread crumbs. Pour the cake mixture inside and bake at 180 degrees for 40/45 minutes. Make sure to constantly check the consistency of the cake because it should not dry out completely.
  7. Just before serving the cake, you can decorate it. Spread some icing sugar on the top of the cake with a sieve and then adjust the orange slices in a pattern that you like Image 7 and 8. See below for tips about serving the cake.

Variants:

Rhum extract (10/15 ml): You can include Rhum extract as an ingredient to add more flavour. You should add it at step 5, blend all ingredients together and then proceed with the other steps.

Cake presentation: If you are using a rectangular shape, instead of serving it as an entire cake, you can also cut it into rectangular slices as a brownie and decorate each piece with a quarter of an orange slice.
